A Few Stray Poems
by Tom Woodard

If I Were to Write a Poem

If I were to write a poem about the girl I love,
It wouldn’t talk about all those stars up above,
Wouldn’t mention those valleys, or mountains,
Nor the winding rivers, or the bluest blue seas,

No, if I were to write a poem to the girl I love,
About how blessed I am by the Lord up above,
I’d tell how I couldn’t live without her sweetness,
And all her wonderful attentions to just old me,

How I’d just as soon die than live without her,
She makes me so happy if I was a cat I’d purr,
And heaven on earth is just to cuddle close,
No one else on earth but just she and me - We,

Love in youth is just a bunch of pain and lust,
To go through that pain I suppose we all must,
But love in old age is sweet as heavy cream,
And the sweetest cream is poured out from thee,

Now that we’ve been together, man and wife,
Loving and loved for just four years of our life,
(But its not been that long the way we feel),
All I see ahead is love and life for you and me,

The days are not getting dreary as we grow old,
Bones may ache but there’s youth in the soul,
And love is sweeter and deeper each passing day,
None could be happier than the couple that’s We.

We’ll travel through life to the end of our days,
Loving one another in our tried and true ways,
Nothing between us but the sweet scent of you,
‘Til in due time the great gates of Heaven we see.
