Musings on Faith #62 'Partner' With God | |
|
I have printed, below, my favorite joke of all time. It is a good one in its own right, but it also brings to my mind a valuable lesson for all Christians, which is that God expects us to do what we can do to help ourselves. As for what we cannot do for ourselves, God will look out for us, and give us His wondrous love and care. Too many people fail to ‘partner’ with God. Some sit idly by ‘waiting on the Lord’ to do for them what they can do for themselves. Others undertake to do that at which they will surely fail without the help of the Lord. It is an important part of our relationship with the Lord to learn to strike a proper balance. Yes, we are His Children, but we are also His Disciples, sent out to do good works and to bring the Gospel to the lost. Hope you enjoy this old story:
There was a man whose home was in the midst of a great flood, and when the waters had risen over his porch and were pouring into the first floor of the house, two men in a canoe came paddling by and urged him to get in, as the waters were rapidly rising. The man said, "No, the Lord will take care of me", so off the two men went, to rescue someone else. As the waters kept rising, the man was forced to retreat to the second floor of his house, and he was looking out a second floor window at the rising waters when two men in a motor boat came up to the window and urged him to get in the boat, as the waters were still rising and it was too dangerous to stay where he was. The man, however, again said "No, my Lord will take care of me", and off the men went to rescue someone else. Finally, the waters had risen so high that the man had been forced to climb to the roof of his house, and was sitting on the ridge of the roof when a helicopter flew up and hovered over the man. One of the men in the helicopter yelled down at him "Sir, grab the rope ladder and get in the helicopter. The waters are still rising, and you will surely be swept away". But the man said, once again, "No, the Lord will take care of me", and the rescuers in the copter reluctantly flew away, to rescue someone else. The waters continued to rise, sweeping the man away, and he drowned. When he arrived in heaven and appeared before the Lord, he said "Lord, why didn't you save me?" and the Lord replied "Thou fool, I sent thee two boats and a helicopter!"
