Musings on Faith #32
Christians Under Attack
Christians in the United States of America are under unprecedented attack. Why would I say this, you ask? If you have been keeping up with the news, you know that Governor Sarah Palin is being unrelentingly attacked by the ultra-left-wing fanatics in Hollywood and in the media. Many of these attacks are based upon her Christian faith. The Governor is a born again Christian, and openly professes her faith. I have personally heard pundits, and even news anchors, on CNN suggest that because of her evangelical Christian faith she may not be "qualified" to serve in public office. What is even more disturbing is the vicious, vulgar, and hateful nature of these attacks, hatred so vicious and vitriolic that I have, in my almost 60 years of life, never seen anything like it in the political arena.

What has this got to do with you, as a Christian? Everything! These attacks are not just against Governor Palin, they are against all born again Christians, and against Christianity itself. They are born of hatred and ignorance, for "[T]he natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1st Corinthians 2:14, KJV)." One of the commentators I heard recently on CNN said that Christians are selfish people, and all about themselves. Thus is their ignorance exemplified. The most disturbing characteristic of all this, for me at least, is the unmitigated, hysterical hatred voiced by these

ignorant people. To suggest that Christian faith disqualifies someone to hold public office in the United States of America is a frightening prospect, to say the very least.  It is a direct attack upon the Constitution of the United States, and a foretaste of the persecution Christ foretold, and which I have been predicting for many years.

So what are we to do in the face of all this hatred? The human inclination is to hate those who hate you, but through Christ, and in obedience to Christ, we are commanded not to hate them but to love them and to pray for them. Christ said "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you, and persecute you (Matthew 5:44, KJV)." Hatred answering for hatred is wholly contrary to the will of God, and we must not succumb to it. The way to be sure that we do not hate them is to obey Christ our Savior and sincerely pray for them, including prayers of forgiveness and prayers that they, too, might come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as their own personal Savior. Christ gave us the ultimate example when, hanging on that cruel cross, he said "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34, KJV)." Follow His example!

Yours in Christ,
Tom Woodard
