Picture Jesus at Your Door

Jesus said "Behold, I stand at the door and knock: If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup [eat] with him, and he with me (Revelations 3:20, KJV)". I want you to try to picture this in your mind's eye - Jesus standing at the door to your heart, and knocking. The decision is yours, whether or not to open the door; whether or not to receive Him into your heart and soul as Savior and Lord. He stands ready to receive you, but He does not force Himself upon you. It is your free choice. Many refuse to open the door because they believe the Christian life is too hard. The opposite is actually true, for when we receive Him, He also receives us, as a member of His family, and He will abide with us. In fact, He will actually come to live within us, in the form of His Holy Spirit, to strengthen, comfort and undergird us.

People think "Oh, I couldn't be a Christian. It's too hard." What is really hard is going through life trying to attain happiness and security within ourselves, or through acquiring wealth, fame, or position, or through more destructive means, such as drugs or alcohol, or through friends and lovers, or any other means apart from God. All such means, and all such efforts, will inevitably fail. Worldly happiness is fleeting. But in Jesus Christ there is eternal joy. And

with the Holy Spirit communing with your spirit, and through prayer and reading God's Word, and seeking His will for our lives, the burden is easy, especially when compared to the futility of attempting to gain and keep a desired level of happiness through worldly means. Once we get to a certain level of achievement or wealth or fame, it no longer seems sufficient, and we keep grasping for more, never being truly satisfied. Eternal satisfaction cannot be attained through the world.

But the true beauty of this Scripture is that part which says "I . . . will sup with him, and he with me". This is a beautiful illustration of the personal relationship which God desires to have with us. It is so personal that we can go to Him and talk directly with Him, through the intercession of Christ, and share with Him our problems and concerns, and cast our cares upon Him, and have Him forgive us of our failings and shortcomings, and never more remember them. Then, with joy in our hearts, regardless of what is occurring in our lives at the time, we can sing, with conviction, that old hymn which says "I am satisfied, I am satisfied, I am satisfied with Jesus". There is one sure way, and that way is Jesus Christ.

Yours in Christ,     Tom Woodard
